A2 Media Coursework - Intertextuality
Intertextuality is where a form of media references another form of media such as music videos, TV, films, video games or specific significant events. If a music video is referencing another form of media or another music video then this can be done through the use of lyrics or visuals in the music video.
Examples of intertextuality in music videos:
This is from Shania Twain's I feel Like A Woman. The intertextuality of this is a reference to Robert Palmer's Addicted to Love.
The picture on the left is from Madonna's Material Girl and the picture on the right is from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.
A more recent example of intertextuality is Robbie William's referencing Alice in Wonderland
Intertextuality is used as a way to bring in more publicity and gain a wider fan base. Intertextuality appeals to the audience as it is a way that they can easily connect to the song meanings. Intertextuality can also help display the main themes of the lyrics as visuals in a way that the audience can easily understand and identify.
Although Intertextuality doesn't suit every type of rock sub-genre; I think as we are planning on doing a more upbeat punk rock song we will use intertextuality once or twice during our video as it is a way to connect to our audience and the song we plan to do was used in the movie American Pie, it will be easy enough to create easily identified forms of intertextuality that work within the song.

Prelim Evaluation Question 5
5) What have you learnt from completing this task? Looking ahead, how will this learning be significant when completing your advanced portfolio, do you think?
From completing this task, I have learn that research and planning is important and helpful but don't take up too much time in this stage, leave enough time to get the task finished. I have also learnt about the use of camera and final cut pro technology.
This will help in my advanced portfolio as it will has improved my time management and technology skills.

Prelim Evaluation Question 4
4. How successful was your music video? Please identify what worked well, and with hindsight, what would you improve/do differently?
The research and planning was our strongest point as we did it enough detail so we knew what we had to do in our filming and so I would do research and planning in a similar way next time but try and be quicker.
We encountered difficulties in filming because of numbers and technology problems. Next time I would make sure that we are familiar with the technology before we start filming and that we are sure that we have everything needed for the filming process.
In the end our music video was not complete due to poor timing towards the end of the task for editing. Additionally, because our group included two classes coordinating an editing schedule was needed but wasn't made and therefore we had an incomplete video. Next time, I would make sure there is enough time for editing and I would set deadlines within the editing process to make sure the task is finished.
Prelim Evaluation Question 3
3) Did you encounter any difficulties? If so, what were they and how did you overcome them?
One of the difficulties we faced while creating the music video was when we were using the video cameras. For example; when we wanted to playback the recent video captured we were unable to do this. To overcome this we used an IPhone to film the video.
Another difficulty that we faced was when we tried to transfer the videos from the IPhone to the IMac. This issue delayed our editing process until we were able to successfully convert the file format.
The final difficulties we had were timing and cast amount. We needed more cast and we didn't have an equal balance between planning, filming and editing time therefore we joined with another group doing the same music video as us.

Prelim Evaluation Question 2
2) What technology did you use to complete the task and how did you use it?
To edit the video we used final cut pro. By having the main singing continuous video on one line and putting certain short shots on the bar above they would cut in and make the music video have quick shots.
In filming we ended up using an IPhone to record our shots as we had problems with our cameras.

Prelim Evaluation Question 1
1)What have you learnt about the importance of research and planning?
Research and planning was important in deciding what music video to do. For this we watched different music videos while looking at shot types and setting to decide on a suitable video.
As a group we were able to agree and decide on 'Fancy by Iggy Azalea Ft Charlie XCX' due to its location since it was based in a school. This made it both convenient as well as challenging because we had to ensure each location was a close match to the original.
To recreate the Fancy music video we split in to pairs and each took a 30 second section of the video to watch in detail and record shot types, what happens in the shots and how long the shot lasts.
Before filming we had to plan filming times, locations and who would be each person. This allowed us to know each persons roles and contributions to the group
Overall, planning and research was an important task needed to complete the music video and become organised.
